The big news at Opera HQ this week was the release of Opera 11.60. Among other features, fixes and updates, this latest version of Opera contains a wholly redesigned browser engine code-named Ragnarök, which is a reference in Norse mythology to a series of earthshaking future events - but we'll just take that as an amazingly far-sighted prediction of HTML5. (Either that, or the first snowfall of the year here in Norway.) ;)
Speaking of momentous, world-changing news, Twitter published a list of topics that had the most tweets per second in 2011. Now, let's recall that an awful lot happened over the past year, from the Arab Spring to Steve Jobs' passing. But outdistancing those particular events by several thousand tweets, not to mention others like the Japanese earthquake, the US East Coast earthquake, Brazil being eliminated from the Copa America and the royal wedding in the UK was... (drum roll, please): the MTV Video Music Awards. Yes, really!
While we're on the topic of information overload, French IT services company ATOS was in the news for its plans to phase out the use of e-mail over the next two years, in favor of more collaborative and social media communication tools. It's a nice idea, but somehow we think that this doesn't really address the underlying problem... most likely, ATOS employees will just start getting spam on their "walls" instead of their inboxes, doncha think?
Finally, in a bit of good news for those of you out there who are ready to stop this crazy spinning planet of ours for a sec and just, well - bail (even if it does mean missing the next edition of the MTV Video Music Awards), scientists announced the discovery of a planet described, intriguingly, as both "Earth-like" and "smack dab in the Goldilocks zone," meaning appropriate for human habitation, though some important details about the planet's actual composition are still TBD...
