BlackBerry Woes Continue as Trade-Ins Surge

A tough spell for Canada-based Research In Motion continued this week, as a Web site that buys used phones reported a surge in BlackBerry devices entering the market.

The surge coincided with the release of Apple's iPhone 4S earlier this month on three of the top four carriers: Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Sprint, all of whom also sell BlackBerry smartphones.

Record Spike

The site, Gazelle, told Forbes.com that users dumping their BlackBerrys reached a record high this month, with an additional 80 percent spike last week. That follows a three-day outage of RIM's data services that prevented some users from accessing BlackBerry Messenger service (BBM) and the Internet Oct. 11-14.

Initially in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the problem later spread to Asia and South America, then to North America. Some disgruntled users this week reportedly filed a class-action suit in Quebec Superior Court because of the outage, seeking refunds and damages, unsatisfied with the company's offer of free tech support and premium apps as amends.

The Gazelle trade-ins coincided not only with the release of the iPhone but the launch of several premium Android-based phones. But Gazelle official Anthony Scarsella told CNET that Android trade-ins during the same period were almost as high, 72 percent, and that the glut of surplus BlackBerry devices was likely due to the iPhone launch.

The report did not mention the quantity of BlackBerrys sold this month and Gazelle did not provide the information requested in time for publication.

One soon-to-be-former BlackBerry user is Jerry Richter, a New York City public school teacher, who is switching his Verizon service from the Tour device he's had for nearly three years to the iPhone 4S he has ordered and expects to receive this week.

Cloud Networking Demand Fuels Citrix Revenue Growth

Citrix Systems reported Thursday that third quarter revenues at the virtual computing technology provider reached $565 million -- a 20 percent rise in comparison with the same quarter last year.

Company executives said the robust growth was fueled by demand for new technologies pertaining to desktop Virtualization and cloud networking, as well as a recent expansion in the capabilities and footprint of Citrix Systems' software-as-a-service (SaaS) business.

Third quarter revenue from the company's desktop solutions business grew 14 percent year over year to $316 million, including product license growth of 24 percent. What's more, third quarter sales of the company's XenDesktop offering increased by more than 65 percent.

"We have strong positions across SaaS and collaboration, virtualization and desktop, networking and cloud platform markets," Citrix Systems CEO Mark Templeton noted.

"And the investments we've made over the past year in people, infrastructure, innovation and go-to-market is powering growth through geographical reach and business model diversity," Templeton said.

Record XenDesktop Sales

Citrix posted record XenDesktop sales in excess of $22 million, with the range of customers spanning the healthcare, retail, insurance, government, and education markets.

"In total, over 3,000 different customers purchased XenDesktop, including 174 transactions for more than 1,000 seats each and 24 deals for over 5,000 seats each," said Citrix Systems CFO David James Henshall.

Third quarter SaaS revenues rose 20 percent to $110 million -- fueled by demand for Citrix collaboration products, which accounted for more than 50 percent of the total. Moreover, third quarter revenue at Citrix Systems' datacenter and cloud business grew 32 percent year over year to $111 million.

"Growth here was again led by NetScaler with license revenue up 48% year-on-year," Henshall told investors during a conference call Thursday.

This week's technology news was, of course, dominated by our very own shiny new releases: an update double-whammy consisting of Opera Mini and Opera Mobile for Android along with as well as turbo-boosted Opera 12 alpha for desktop hardware acceleration, WebGL support, and super-cool customizable themes. If you haven't already done so, try them out and let us know what you think!

Elsewhere on the Web, people on several continents were either disappointed or delighted that they could not receive e-mail on their BlackBerry devices for the better part of four days. No-one has filed a lawsuit over the outage - yet - which either means people are satsfied with the apology offered by RIM execs or they are still too busy catching up on e-mail.

Even as BlackBerry owners were suffering a forced service downgrade, the planet-formerly-known-as-Pluto was being subjected to even worse indignities. Having already been demoted to dwarf planet status several years ago, the latest astronomical discoveries are now putting Pluto in the same category as the "three relatively bright space rocks" found to be orbiting in its vicinity. What lesson can we draw from that? Well, when life deals you Kuiper belt objects, the least you can do is be reflective... :rolleyes:

Speaking of Pluto, US space agency NASA's New Horizons space probe is already about halfway there, and is expected to do a flyby of "everybody's favorite dwarf planet" by 2015. Check out this gallery of everybody's favorite future technology - robots, of course! - that will help complete the mission.

Since things seem to have gone all science fiction-y today, let's wrap up with news about strange microscopic organisms. First, a megavirus with the largest-known genome was discovered off the coast of Chile. While still invisible to the human eye, the size of the organism has challenged scientists' previously held notions of just how big a virus can get. Having said that, viruses are still generally smaller than bacteria, which is where we turn next. A study in the UK announced this week that a significant proportion of mobile phones carry the kinds of bacteria that cause infectious disease, such as e-coli. :yuck: Moral of the story here is an easy one: wash your hands before and after using your phone... and doing anything else.
